How this calculator works
The calculator multiplies the footprint dimensions, applies a pitch factor to account for the slope, adds a waste allowance, and converts the total into roofing squares and bundles.

- The roof is a simple gable over a rectangular footprint. Complex roofs need a professional measurement.
- Bundle count assumes asphalt shingles at three bundles per square. Other materials differ.
- The estimate covers shingles only. Underlayment, flashing, drip edge, ridge caps, ventilation, and fasteners are separate.
- One roofing square equals 100 square feet.
Worked example
A 40 ft by 30 ft footprint is 1,200 sq ft. At a 6/12 pitch, the factor is √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118, so the roof area is about 1,342 sq ft. Adding 10% gives 1,476 sq ft, which is 14.76 squares. At three bundles per square that rounds up to 45 bundles.

- How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 1,200 square foot roof?
- Roofing is measured in squares, and one square is 100 square feet. A 1,200 square foot roof is 12 squares. Asphalt shingles commonly come three bundles to a square, so that is 36 bundles before any waste allowance.
- Does roof pitch change how much material I need?
- Yes. A sloped roof has more surface area than the footprint beneath it. For example, a 6/12 pitch increases the area by about 12 percent compared with a flat roof.
- How much extra material should I order?
- Ten percent is a common allowance for cuts, ridges, and valleys. Complex roofs with many intersections or steep slopes may need more.
- Can I replace my own roof?
- Roofing involves working at height on a sloped surface, often with power tools and hot materials. Unless you have the proper fall protection, equipment, and experience, hire a licensed roofing professional.
