How this calculator works
The calculator finds the area, adds a waste allowance, divides by the area of a single tile, and rounds up. If you enter tiles per box, it then rounds the tile count up into boxes.

- Tile dimensions are nominal and do not account for grout joint width.
- The area is rectangular. Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and add the results.
- The waste allowance defaults to 10% and is applied before the tile count is rounded.
- Grout, thinset, and trim are not included.
Worked example
A 10 ft by 10 ft floor is 100 sq ft. Adding 10% gives 110 sq ft. A 12 x 12 inch tile covers 1 sq ft, so you need 110 tiles. If the tiles come 10 per box, that rounds up to 11 boxes.

- How many 12x12 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?
- A 12 x 12 inch tile covers 1 sq ft, so 100 sq ft needs at least 100 tiles. With a 10% waste allowance the calculator returns 110 tiles. If the tiles come 10 per box, that is 11 boxes.
- How many tiles are in a box?
- It varies by manufacturer and tile size, so check the box or product listing. Enter that number in the calculator to convert tiles into boxes.
- Does this include grout?
- No. Grout and thinset are estimated separately because the amount depends on tile size, joint width, and trowel notch. Grout coverage charts are usually printed on the grout bag.
- Should I add extra tiles for cuts?
- Yes. Cuts around edges, outlets, and corners create waste, and having spare tiles from the same batch makes repairs possible later. Ten percent is a reasonable starting allowance.
